CUYAHOGA FALLS: A Republican Cuyahoga Falls City Council candidate could find herself living outside the ward she is running to represent should a proposed redistricting map be approved.Council is considering shifts to ward boundaries to reflect population changes as a result of the 2010 Census.A map now under consideration would move Ward 4’s border two blocks east to 14th Street. That would mean Republican Marianne Sandy, who is challenging Democratic Ward 4 Councilman Mark Ihasz, would no longer live in the ward. Sandy ran against Ihasz in 2009 and lost by 186 votes.Democratic Councilman Don Walters, who is chairing the redistricting committee, said that in drawing the map, he made sure current council members remained within their wards. He said he didn’t want to create a political fight like the one in 2001, when Republicans drew Democrat John Schmidt out of his ward. The goal is to have about 6,200 people living in each ward.“To be honest, I didn’t think of candidates or future candidates,” Walters said.He said he would welcome comments about the new boundaries. The committee will meet tonight after the City Council meeting at the Natatorium. The council meeting begins at 6:30 p.m.Councilman-at-Large Jeff Iula, the lone Republican on the three-member committee, said he will submit an alternative plan that would leave Sandy in her ward.Iula said the wards have been deformed by political redistricting over the years.“My first night on council, when I had the big [ward] map in front of me, I thought, ‘Why in the hell do we have four wards on the east side?’ ” Iula said. “There are only about 12,200 people in that area.”The map he will propose would put the neighborhoods east of Newberry Street near the Schwebel’s plant into two wards and divide more of the population between six of the eight wards.“I think Wards 1, 2 and 4 are about maxed out,” Iula said. “Make those about maximum population and make Wards 5 and 8 a little smaller, because that’s where the growth is going to be.”Iula hopes to have his map ready by tonight’s committee meeting. If the map drawn by Walters is passed by council and Sandy wins in November, she would be allowed to live in Ward 3 and represent Ward 4 for the next two years. In 2013, Sandy would have to either quit council or run in Ward 3, which is currently represented by fellow Republican Ken Barnhart. Ihasz did not return a request seeking comment.Sandy said she wants to run and live in the same ward.“It’s deflating,” Sandy said. “State Democrats are complaining that the Republicans are being unfair [in redistricting state maps]. County Democrats have done it to Bath Township. Am I surprised? Politics is politics.“Anytime you get involved, you should expect things like this.”
